Pitta Dosha

Pitta Dosha is composed of the elements fire and water and is in charge of all the processes of digestion, metabolism, and transformation in the body. It is responsible for regulating the body's temperature, luster of the skin, energy, metabolism, intellect, appetite, and the persons bravery.

Ayurveda is a quality based science. The qualities of Pitta dosha are oily, penetrating, hot, light/quick, strong odor, and watery. Ayurveda says to balance the doshas one must incorporate the opposite qualities. We practice this with the foods we eat, the thoughts we have, the types of exercise we do, and so on.

Body Constitution: Pitta dosha's tend to have a medium build with toned muscles. Their skin tends to be fair with freckles. They run warm and have a reddish hue, they tend to be more sensitive and can be prone to acne, rashes, and other skin conditions. Because of their fire element. This dosha can be sensitive to heat and can become irritable when in the heat for too long or feel sick. Pitta's tend to sweat more and can have foul smelling body odor. When off balance they can suffer from bad breath as well

Digestion: Pitta constitutions tend to have a healthy appetite and are the ones that are prone to becoming hangry if they don't eat on time. However, when consuming too many Pitta aggravating foods and spices this dosha is prone to loose bowels, acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion.

Sleep Cycle: Pitta people sleep well but lean towards being a lighter sleeper. Since their bodies run warm they prefer to keep the covers light with a cool material. Pitta-types often awake due to vivid dreams including nightmares, they can usually fall back asleep. However, if anyone is going to be a night owl it is the Pitta dosha their energy and productivity bursts in the night time and they are able to get work down or power through whatever needs to get done.

Intellectually: Pitta-type people are very intelligent, they are confident leaders, they are direct and clear, extremely competitive, highly ambitious, go getters (type A peeps), have a high drive for success, and a get to the point attitude. They are the work hard play hard dosha! They are full of energy, compassionate, sharp people. But don't forget you are playing with fire here, when a Pitta dosha is off balance they can be very aggressive, harsh, and hostile. They can have temper tantrums and become very jealous and controlling. Due to their fiery nature all the heat if not properly noticed and taken care of can build up as inflammation in the body causing the Pitta person to suffer from skin irritations, depression, loose stools, anger issues, headaches, fatigue, acid buildup, heart burn, heart attack, and much more.

Lifestyle Recommendations for Pitta Dosha

Since Pittas elements are dominated by fire and water the qualities are hot and oily, a pitta constitution needs more calming and cooling routines added into their lives or can burn themselves out! Working out is a great way to burn off some steam however Pittas should keep in mind that they should consider exercises that are more calming and not over heating like hot yoga classes (which they lovee). It is best to try swimming, yin yoga, weight lifting, hiking, biking, rocking climbing, and alike. Pittas should choose have a workout that gives deep a challenge but will not overheat them.

Pittas-types are very type A, they love a challenge, work hard, and can be harder on themselves. It is an absolute must that they take time for themselves to reset and relax. Taking the time time to ground themselves a take it easy, focusing on giving the mind and body a break from their go go go personality. Taking time for themselves could be creating a morning or evening ritual, it could be lathering the body with cooling oils like coconut, or slowing down and indulging in a book. If not frustration and burnout is inevitable.

Tastes that Balance Pitta

Sweet, bitter, astringent and cool flavors combat the Pittas fire. Favor foods that are cool/warm, avoiding or minimizing foods that are overly hot and spicy which can aggravate the fire element within the body.

It is best to buy locally sourced foods so you know where your groceries are coming from. Look for organic, non GMO, avoid seed oil (canola, vegetable, sunflower, safflower, etc.) Always read the labels and avoid things you cannot pronounce because these are usually harmful additives and preservatives.

Reduce or Remove

Tastes that are pungent, sour, salty or too hot can be aggravating to Pitta-types. Removing or reducing these tastes from Pitta types can really help benefit their mind and digestion!
